Agents of SHIELD: Characters (7)

Adam Cross and Tony Diaz

Both of these men were volunteers with the New York Fire Department. After the battle of New York they were called in to support the rebuilding effort. The team took a Chitauri helmet as a trophy of their part in the event. One night they decided to polish it, when they did they contracted an alien virus that caused a fatal buildup of static electricity, which caused them to float in mid air on death. Both men died of the virus, but after inadvertently infecting Jemma Simmonds a cure was found in time to save her, preventing further infections.

Star Wars: Upcoming Fiction

More details have emerged about Aftermath, one of the new novels announced in the run up to The Force Awakens.

Publishers summary follows

The second Death Star is destroyed. The Emperor and his powerful enforcer, Darth Vader, are rumored to be dead. The Galactic Empire is in chaos. Across the galaxy, some systems celebrate, while in others Imperial factions tighten their grip. Optimism and fear reign side by side. And while the Rebel Alliance engages the fractured forces of the Empire, a lone Rebel scout uncovers a secret Imperial meeting…

The message definitely seems to be about an Empire that is down but not out. I do wonder how much crossover there will be with Marvel’s Shattered Empire, but with the new Story Group I’m sure they’ve got it covered.

The novel is the first in a trilogy bridging the gap between films, it will be released on September 4th

Star Wars: Shattered Empire and other news

The Star Wars news keeps coming thick and fast as I try and keep up.

On the Rogue One front, IGN had a report that some concept art had been shared with a select group and had some resemblance to Halo, what exactly wasn’t clear – hopefully we’ll get to see something soon.

Also, Alexandre Desplat has been announced as the composer for the film.

In publishing news, Marvel have given a title to one of their post-Jedi series. Shattered Empire

From the picture it looks like were right in the aftermath of Endor, with the Empire in disarray. The next events have been well established in the EU, but this is the time for a new chapter to take place and while my heart would love to see a certain red-eyed Grand Admiral return I know the series needs to become its own entity.

I’m excited to see how the new future of Star Wars plays out. It’s an exciting time to be a fan!!!

Agents of SHIELD: Technology (6)

Ocular Implants

Designed by Cybertek and used by the Centipede group within Hydra, these implants replaced a users eye and were used to control subjects to ensure they obeyed orders. Orders could be transmitted to the implant as a text message, if the orders were disobeyed the implant could cause pain to the user and if necessary detonate to prevent them from given up any information.

The implants had backscatter capabilities, allowing the user to clearly see through walls and other objects. The implants were inserted into all Centipede soldiers to ensure loyalty, including Deathlok.

Star Wars Episode VIII, Rogue One and Journey to The Force Awakens

Wow there’s been a lot of Star Wars news this week!!

First off the bat is a release date for Episode VIII, May 26, 2017, almost exactly forty years after the release of the original Star Wars.

Next we have a title for the first standalone movie, Rogue One is set for release on December 16, 2016. Also in the news is that Felicity Jones (The Theory of Everything) is the first cast member to join this production. The title sounds intriguing, likely themed around X-Wing pilots – maybe a WWII war movie vibe?

A new publishing campaign has been announced, giving us a glimpse into what’s been going on for 30 years in a Thrawn/Daala/Solo kids/Yuuzhan Vong-free galaxy

Titles will focus on the ‘big three’ and include young adult novels as well as for younger readers.

Also mentioned are titles Aftermath and Lost Stars, no further information on those yet. Marvel are releasing comics as well under the ‘journey’ banner and a stack of reference books are due to come out.

Fuller details on all these news items are on

Agents of SHIELD: Characters (5)

Akela Amador

Akela Amador was a SHIELD operative who was captured when she disobeyed orders on a critical mission. After being detained in a prison for years she was released by the Centipede group, who implanted a device in her head to control her.

Under their command she completed a number of high profile thefts to fund access to a secure research facility. During this mission she was intercepted by SHIELD, who redirected the feed from here eye to a set of glasses so that Ward could go ahead while they removed the device.

Akela’s hope of finding out why she was being controlled was short lived when it turned out her handler had the same device implanted in his head, which detonated and killed him. She was put on trial for the crimes she had been forced to commit, though Coulson attended the hearing to testify on her behalf.

Doctor Who: New series, new species part 52

Kantroffari (Dream Crabs)

Given that they openly admitted the likeness to facehuggers from Alien I thought these aliens were OK and allowed for a fun scenario with the Doctor and Santa saving the day, though it did get me excited thinking that Santa could be another lost Time Lord, but anyway…

The Kantroffari, more commonly known as Dream Crabs, were parasitic beings that fed on the brain matter and activity of sentient beings. While absorbing their food they projected a dream state into the minds of their victims, even layering dreams to make the victims believe they had woken up. The connection was their weakness, for if a victim could truly wake up and break free of the dream the the crab would wither and die.
